Wow! Talk about day and night! Beagles are calm. Jacks are spazs. Jacks are smarter than Beagles. Why these 2? You need to consider the characteristics of the 2 breeds and your current dog's personality and decide which is the better fit.

I have Beagles and they will get along with any dog (working as a pack is part of their nature), The question is how will your Chihuahua get along with an active breed like a Beagle or a Jack Russel

Jack Russell: very high energy, not able to integrate with cats. I have a friend who breeds them. If you want a lot of energy go with the Russel. Beagles are a lot calmer. You have to figure out what personality type will fit into your home. Check with a breeder to see if Russell can co-exist with your present animal. Not all animals can co-habit, some are more territorial than others. Good luck.

Rat Terriers are best. ...but I'd go with the a Jack Russell over a Beagle. Beagles are hounds and are more outside dogs. They also bark and howl a TON.

I like the Jack Russell myself, they are a smart, playful breed. They were bred to hunt rabbits, but make much better indoor dogs. Also they are smaller (under 15 pounds normally). Another breed to look into is the mountain feist, which is very similar to the Jack Russell.

Depends on the time you have, and the space you have. I prefer the Jack Russel, but they are high energy, very loving dogs. They will dig under the fence when your back is turned. Mine ignores an open gate, but will dig under if it's closed. Neither one would do well in an apartment, or being left alone for long periods.

Jack Russell Terrier are HIGH energy, so if you aren't a high energy person -- get the beagle.
