You don't.. haha they love the couch but no seriously -
Just hold his/her chin and look at them and say no in a stern voice and take them down - sometimes, even though they are the best, sweetest, safest dogs in the world - they may snarl or growl though if you mess with their place. Sometimes, reward them with a cookie for getting off of the couch - but not everytime. If you leave - you could put a board or gate in front of it or lean the cushions on an angle but if you enforce it when you are there, they will learn not to do when you are not there also. The most important thing is consistency, reinforcement and praise - they can't get enough praise.
I would also buy a doggie bed for that room so they have a nice comfy place to go - then when they come in - go over there and pat it and say here - come here. He/she won't like it at first but sometimes if you add a pillow and a blanket - it will be their new favorite home.. and you - can have your couch back.
:o)

I have two Golden Retrievers INSIDE....I had the same problem then we bought a new couch so we decided they were not getting on it. We just would tell them everytime they were getting ready to jump on it "NO" and made them sit then if they didn't try to get up there again we would give them a cookie..Practice makes perfect and they are not going to remember after the first time you tell them no. Just keep reminding them and rewarding them when they don't get up there. As for when you are not there I don't know what to tell you. We put our two in the basement when we are not there.

I visited a friend a few years ago, and when I walked into their house here was NFTCH-AFTCH Call Me Mister Independence (Spook) sitting on the couch beside Gunther EATING HIS OWN BOWL OF ICE CREAM ! ! !
After having Labs since the late 40s, I can tell ya, the only way to keep a Lab off the couch is to give them their own couch.

we spread newspapers all along the couch before we leave for the day. when they crawl up there the noise and the feeling of the newspaper is irritating so they find somewhere else to lay. you can also tell when they have gotten up because the paper is wrinkled and torn, continue to do this until there is no sign of them getting onto the couch. this may take a while, but hte longer you do it and they get the point, then the habit is usually broken

Their is this great invention called a "Scat Mat" Is is an electronic pad that when it is stepped on delivers a low voltage shock. Place it in front of or on the couch. He wont get on the couch again! I used it to keep my dogs from jumping on the window. Works great!

When I leave the house, I put a broom across my couch. It keeps the dog off. I also have a dog bed that he can lay on.

the completed effect of castration only isn't considered for a at the same time as, months even. in spite of the indisputable fact that, I hate to allow you to recognize in spite of the indisputable fact that the only given with castration is the shortcoming of ability to sire pups. something is a lottery, and for me, a lot as you've been smart no longer to get him done too early to grant him a danger to mature somewhat, it really is commonly the case that when neutered, adult males can stay 'stupid pups' for all their lives. i imagine you presently ought to spotlight workout him nicely, and coaching.

Just start working with them right away. I have four labs and they never get on the furniture, you can put your food right in front of them and they will not touch it. They know how to go to their room and stay there and I have never laid a hand on them or used food to teach them. they are very smart animals. Teach them as you would a child. Love and patience.
