Their skinny diameter makes them harder to form than the wider AA ones. Poking the chemicals down into the skinny tube with thin toothpicks is much tougher than the comparable loading task for the big ones where you can use a pencil eraser to tamp it all in.

well most of the time a pack of AAA has more batteries in it than AA do.
