I have a freind in England who wants to become a citizen in the US. I realize you have to go through a naturalization process, but before all of that, what do you do? What are the first steps? And any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Why would you want to? Tell your friend to stay in England.

For the person who said your friend needs to learn English, sounds like they need to learn a little bit about our own history (i.e., our forefathers were from the UK and thus spoke English and that's why we do!). First your friend needs to become a legal permanent resident. He can either do that through being sponsored by an employer or having a U.S. citizen relative (spouse - get married, mother/father, etc.). Until he becomes a legal permenant resident, he cannot become a citizen.

Unfortunately, persons from the UK do not qualify for the diversity lottery. So don't let him/her be scammed into paying someone to apply for them.

Before you even consider naturalization as a U.S. citizen, learn English, because you hjave to be able to speak English, Nect take a class, because you will also be required to know U.S. History, and a number of other things. Then when you are about ready, get the proper forms from INS and get the paperwork started. They will assign you a testing date. if you pass the test, you will then be assigned a date for naturalization.
