FAO Neil, thanks for the extensive answer, but as for the history lesson, I think you were the one sleeping in school, 1919? not even relevant as far as the republic being declared nor coming to fruition, Slán go foill.

You can't, at least not legally.
If you do get one, it cannot legally be used on the road (but is perfectly legal on private property, so you could have it on the car on your driveway, provided you changed the plates for legal ones every time you go out in the car).

Plates in the Republic of Ireland have the EU symbol (a circle of yellow stars on a blue background) with the letters "IRL" below. This is only legal on a car registered in the Republic of Ireland.
The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK - have you been asleep since 1919?
The Irish tricolour is not a UK flag, and therefore has no more right to be on a UK plate than the union jack has on an Republic of Ireland plate, or the American stars-and-stripes on a Spanish plate.

Originally the DVLA in the UK only allowed the same EU symbol plus the "GB" letters. After some pressure from motorists the DVLA approved separate England, Scotland and Wales logos.

There isn't an approved logo in Northern Ireland - and if there was one having it on your plates would be asking for trouble if you parked your car in the wrong area (flags and emblems are a VERY divisive issue there). I would even be careful with a car with GB on it, in case I offended anyone.

Car registration in Northern Ireland is administrated by DVLNI, not the DVLA, and there hasn't been a change in the registration numbering system there for decades. The GB logos became legal in England, Scotland and Wales with the legislation that allowed the DVLA to introduce the new-style numbers with the "51" plates in September 2001. This legislation does not cover Northern Ireland.

Well I got mine done at the last Peterborough BMF Show, it looked awesome it was for my bike I wrote "brazilian by blood, american by heart on it" and added an american flag on it! And they guy use to do all types of plates!

But if you are from London there is this place on the A113

It's on Chigwell Rd. (a113) right where Boradmead Rd. (A1009) meets! Easy right infront of the traffic light can't miss it!

----- Edited

I just noticed u said u live in scotland, thendo this go to google search and type show off plates in scotland! and u'll find! I did one on-line once and didn't come out too good, but give it a try!

like others I dont know
I think the chances of you getting a plate valid for a UK registered car with an Irish flag or IE on are slim to non existent in the UK.

You may be able to get one from a motor factor in the Republic.

However it will not be legal int he UK - its could provide an excude for the police to stop you.

BTW: I think car plates int he UK can now only be issued on presetnation fo the V5/ car registration docs
