Have a CLEAN salon. My mom and I have a spa and that's the MOST important thing you can offer your client. No one wants to enter a salon/spa that is dirty. It makes them wonder about how clean you are. Sanatize your equipment. If you're doing nails, make sure all your implements are CLEAN. You're required to get an autoclave (starting in 07) to steam clean your implements to reduce/kill bacteria. If you want a spa or hair stylists, you should think about getting products. Get hair products and spa products. When you style someone's hair, they often complain that when they go home they can't get the same results. Offer them the products you use to style their hair and it helps when you show them step-by-step how to fix their hair. Do what makes THEM happy. You can offer advice on haircuts/nails but remember it's what the client wants. Even if you know it won't look good on them, they are the ones paying YOU. Make sure when you do a chemical treatment (perm/dye) you get them to fill out a consent form. Go over their hair condition w/them. Some peoples' hair is fried and damaged, yet they still want something done to it. Once they sign the consent form, it's all in THEIR hands and they are held responsible. Be sure you have a valid license because you will be in trouble if it's a fake one. Oh, and be friendly. Even if you are having a shitty day, it makes the client feel better to know they can talk to you. Open up and make small talk. Who wants to go to someone who looks pissed off? That puts the client in a bad mood and feels awkward. Please don't forget that if you plan to have people work for you, they need a contract. It's easier that way. Do commission or booth rental for them. That way they are liable for themselves and if you have a signed contract, they can't sue you for anything. If they work commission, they work hours you tell them to and you make a percentage of what they do. If they choose booth rental, they come and go as they please but pay you a weekly fine. Get a loan and start your business.
