Say you met this wonderful person, this person may be a potential friend/boyfriend/girlfriend. He/she was caring, giving, loving, understanding, selfless, fun, funny, respectful, resourceful, and all-around just a great person. You just can't believe how cool this person is, you think that you can be friends with this person forever, or in the case of a relationship, marry this person.
However, you come to find out that this person is an atheist. Do you continue being friends or a couple with this person, or do severe all contact just because of your religious views?

Being an atheist myself, this knowledge would only make the person more appealing to me. I'm guessing you were not directing this question at atheists, though =)
I am interested to find out, however, how many people would shun me in real life if they found out that I was an atheist? It's not something I shove in people's faces, so I'm guessing most of the people I know don't know this about me.... I wonder if their feelings about me would really change?

If you like them so much, it doesn't change who they are as a person to you. However a romantic relationship may not work in the long run since similar beliefs (both religious things and just regular life things) are important, but sometimes it does. Even if a romantic relationship doesn't happen or doesn't stay, there is no reason to cut a person out of your life if you have liked them all this time before you knew.

I would continue to be friends with this person. We could debate and discuss religious ideas grow in our relationship.

If you're dogmatic you have to choose, love or a deluded fantasy world. If he's up for it you could both compromise a little, my wife's a little bit religious, it doesn't bother me because you won't catch me wasting Sundays in church, she goes once in a blue moon so no problem.

I myself am an atheist, but my husband who is a Christian still married me. He respect my beliefs and I respect his, no reason for either of us to walk away from someone we love so much and are so compatible with.

well, if u are a Christian, think of it this way: you may be the only bible that person ever comes in contact with. if you aren't (or for that matter, this applys if you are as well) think of it this way: do you like/love this person? do you enjoy his/her company? if so, then i see no reason why you should stop talking to them.

I am a Wiccan and I believe that all paths lead to enlightenment so I wouldn't care. Blessed be.

Actions, not labels. That's all that matters, is how a person carries themselves through life.

assuming the spiritual aspects of things were ... compatible, then I wouldn't care.
but bottom line is that I wouldn't be able to be that close to someone to begin with, if they would think my spiritual views were nuts.
