I live in Mexico and I´ve never heard of something like that before, unless....... it could be caused by an aquatic animal, I don´t know it´s name in english but it´s transparent and looks like hair gel, it can burn your skin very badly, you better go to a dermatologist.

Did you go into the ocean? Could be from a jellyfish. Did you get near native vegetation? Could be from an exotic plant. Don't have much info from you to go on here. Did you sleep outside? Could be from an indigenous insect. Look for something in common with others that have the same symptoms and try to narrow down the possibilities.

My brother spent some time in Guatemala several years ago and he had a similar experience. It turned out that there is an insect there (I don't know which one or if there are others like it) that excretes a very acidic urine as a defense mechanism. Basically, the insect peed on his arm and his arm blistered in a line. Maybe this is what happened to you and your friends.
