how do i get my ubuntu linux to recognize my new jdk1.5 installation as the default java virtual machine?

i have successfully installed the jdk, but my ubuntu linux 6.06 distribution still uses the jvm it shipped with as its default. I would like to change this default setting to the new jdk which i have installed.
