All the office suites, (Open Office, WordPerfect, IBM Lotus Smartsuite) have presentation software and all work pretty good and all work pretty much alike. I know, I've used them all.

But in terms of 'Universality', PowerPoint is the best. More people use it, more operating systems can display a ppt presentation, and Microsoft is the only software publisher that seems to make any effort at keeping their product, up to date and marketable as a stand alone product. The others can only be gotten by buying the entire Suites.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is the only publisher that seems to take this type of software seriously. PowerPoint is the only software of this sort I would spend my money on.

There are others, but with just about everyone being able to use a powerpoint presentation, it is more the universal language. I really don't know of any others (at least not any that are better.)

you could also try Open Office:
http://www.openoffice.org/
it has Impress which is similar to Powerpoint and will open and edit Powerpoint presentations. As for which is best, Open Office is free and works in a similar fasion to PowerPoint, the only way to find out is to try them and see which you prefer.
