A midwife is different than a doctor. There are different "levels" of midwifery.....meaning different training and licensing. Lay midwives, certified practicing midwives (CPM) and certified nurse midwives (CNM). A midwife is a woman who cares for other women.....some do well women care, they do prenatal care and attend births. Midwives typically have a more natural philosophy about birth than doctors. They are typically more "hands off" and more "low tech" and the mothers who use midwives tend to prefer natural births. They only care for women who are having healthy, low risk pregnancies. They tend to provide more personalized care than doctors. A typical doctor visit usually means less than 10-15 minutes with the doctor. A typically midwife visit typically means *at least* 30 minutes with the midwife. Some work on their own and some work with doctors. Some deliver babies in a hospital, a free-standing birth center and some only do homebirths.

A midwife is a professionally educated, trained and certified person who attends to women.. A woman without medical training is called a Doula. Midwives treat all women ..not just pregnant women. But for actual child birth deliveries, they specialize in low risk. However they do partner with doctors and mothers for prenatal care & childbirth. Midwives are ob/gyn's who prefer to use low tech methods during pregnancy and childbirth. They feel that women were built to give birth and do not need a lot of medical intervention. They teach women how to be in tune with their bodies and understand their bodies. They are much more involved with the personal side of medical care & welcome meeting the rest of your family. They can be your only medical professional for your entire pregnancy and childbirth. Or they can just be there to comfort you in the hospital during delivery. Some work with hospitals and some have their own Birthing centers. It is proven that midwife deliveries result in less c-sections, stillbirths & infant deaths.

A midwife is a person who is not a doctor, but is able to deliver a baby. People will use a midwife if they are planning to have a home or natural birth. A midwife will work with your OB during your pregnancy and will be available at the delivery.

A midwife is a nurse specifically trained to help deliver babies. In the UK we have community midwifes who help and advise women during pregnancy, home birth and visit afterwards to make sure both mother and baby continue to do well and stay healthy. We also have midwives in the hospitals who will deliver babies as long as there are no complications.

the term midwife is actually from around the 1500s and is used to describe the woman or women that helped in the delivery of children. they're actually still quite common today and most have at least basic medical training should a complication arise during birth.

I had a Dr with my first and a midwife in the course of the 1st area of my 2d. i stopped up with an emergency c-section through fact the little one does not drop into the beginning canal. I favorite seeing the scientific expert for the checkups somewhat than the midwife, through fact they saved rotating midwives in the course of my being pregnant so anytime I observed one, I had to flow back by using all my scientific history, and so on. The midwife & trainee I had on a similar time as in labour have been very superb, and we had a sturdy time until i became into taken in for the c-section.
