Assumpting you live in the UK, Golf Monthly rcenetly tested a whole batch of budget drivers. As you're new to the game I'd suggest not spending too much at first. So
HIPPO XXL £69.99
BENROSS V12+ £99
MD GOLF Superstrong EQL £99.99
RAM Wizard Evolution £59.99
are your best choices. Ram won the comparison test.

I recently started playing myself. I now play off 20.
I bought a very cheap driver from sports world
(sports-world.com) for about £20 made by Dunlop it was perfectly adequate to learn with, however I have changed it now for a Callaway driver that will last me a lot longer and is actually a lot more forgiving but 10 times the price. The one club I own now that I wish I had earlier is a 20 degree utility wood made by Lynx this is as easy to hit as an iron but has the distance of a fairway wood.
If I were you I would try and find somewhere like American golf and try a few clubs out to see what suits you. Then buy on-line as there are plenty of bargains to be had.
All the best and practice really is the best way to improve.

The Cleveland Launcher Titanium 460 (i think it's the 2004 model) is absolute BEST VALUE for money driver.
Although now it is replaced by the new Launcher Ti460, Comp & HiBore, this one is still just as good.
Sound = Pinggggggggggggggggg
Distance = Bang
Forgivingness = Maximum
Looks = Very assuring (gold color Fujikura stock shaft with a serious looking head design)
Handicap = High-Mid. If you improve to a Low handicap, get a proper club-fitting and upgrade the shaft.
I am sure you can get a good bargain for this previous season driver at eBay or your local golf pro shop.
Don't listen to me, Check out what other people say about it.

if ur just starting leave the driver in the bag, use a 3 wood or even a 5 wood, u can still get 200 yds out of them.
for a beginer the best wood in his bag is-----his pencil.!

I would probably steer away from wood. Go with an inexpensive metal driver. There is a reason all the Tour players use them.

If you have a Sport World/Sports Soccer shop near you, check them out.
They currently have Dunlop 65i drivers (titanium head) starting from as little as £7.99 (steel shaft) or £13.99 (graphite).
If you're a beginner you should get a more lofted one (11.5 deg ideally).
