i have always told my daughter that she will get a spank when we get home. she immediately tries to find some way out of it and behaves. i tell her she has from now until we get home to earn her way out of a spank. so if she's polite and uses her manners and doesn't get out of control by running through the store, then she earns the no spank.
i use this for other things as well. like tv. if she loses tv because she left a mess for me to clean up then she can earn it back by, say doing dishes or sweeping the floor.
i think this earning thing works well. if she's not behind and doesn't need to earn anything then she gets bonuses. like extra tv or picking out a dessert. things like that.
i have not actually spanked my girl in 4 years now. she is nine now.
i also believe there's a line between spanking and abuse. i call it a spank because its one swat to the behind. my friends used to pick on me because i would ask my daughter if she wanted a spank, instead of spanking. oh well.
also we communicate all the time.

Nope, I'm not for spanking. I know my 5 yr old still needs a little whack on the butt when he's being really bad and just refuses to listen, but that's very rare. Usually the most he needs is just take him gently by the arm and make eye contact and tell him what's up. I would never spank a child in front of other people at any age because of the humiliation they would suffer--and they would resent you for it. Nothing wrong with time-out instead.

If she needed a spanking, Yes. Nothing is wrong with spanking and it is not against the law in any state. I have a 3 year old son & when he needs to be spanked I spank him. He is a well behaved child. He only gets spanked when needed.

Never. I do spank her in private though. There is a difference between spanking a child with purpose for the discipline of the child, and lashing out with a smack because you are angry.

I wouldn't spank my 5 year old daughter at all, whether around other people or in private.

A tap on the bottom is okay but becareful who you spank your child around! There are to many nuts out there who would accuse you of child abuse! Today's society is way to out of whack and to spank a child is so bad! I grew up with being spanked and I turned out alright! I see nothing wrong with spanking a child if they do something to where they need alittle tap on the tushy then so be it!!

uuuuhhhhh yea....if it was neccessary. If you wait till you find a private place...it won't have the same affect. the point in spanking is to teach a lesson. It needs to be done immediatly after she did something bad. Yes even if its at the mall where there is no where close that is private.

Yes. If she acts up in front of those other people. If you dont she will think its ok to act that way in front of other people. I would spank her when and where she does it. That way you stand your ground as a parent and everyone else knows that you dont let her run all over you. You deserve respect to!

First off this is JUST my opinion. If anyone gets offended I am SORRY.
NO, thats traumatizing for the child. ( I like to put myself in my kids shoes before my actions), First of all its embarrassing and secondly that leads to your kids resenting you and then they could start to feel hatred towards you. I think parents that do that CONSTANTLY dont have better tactics and ways to talk and to discipline their child. I wasnt brought up that way, my parents spoke to me, they used their words instead their hand and believe me those words stuck with me and i greatful that they didnt spank me.

I usually only pop my son on the butt if he is doing something dangerous, so if other people are around and he decides to try to run out in the road, he will get a pop. Better to pop on the butt than have your child get killed by a car. I don't care who is around. If there was a cop around I would still give a pop on the butt for him doing that!
