I think a lot of kids now, for some reason, want to be in relationships. They like the idea of the person they like liking them back, and doing something about it. I remember when I was in elementary school, a few kids started talking about "going out" but it really never lasted long. Same thing in middle school - except that started becoming more common. Anything longer than a week was considered a long time for those relationships.

I also think that kids like the idea of having someone be their boyfriend/girlfriend. They like being able to tell people they're in a relationship because it makes them seem popular/older. I think it's one of those things that's mainly done for the label.

OMG! That's one of the biggest problems at my school. I'm an 11-year-old 6th grader, and most of the "relationships" kids have going on,are no more than puppy love. This is a bigger problem among the "popular" & "preppie" kids
Now me and my boyfriend are actually real. We were extremely good friends for a long time, and we both thought it was time to take it to the next level. It was perfect for us. We have so much in common, and we can talk about anything. Him and my friends even call me Dr. Sara, because I give such good advice.
But mostly, the "relationships" are blatant fakes.

I know that feeling.. My daughter 9 she just recently asked me if she could go to the movies with her friend and of course i said NO!!! you are just to young,.. And she turned around and said
Mom I am not a baby any more and you need to learn to let go a little... So first i stood there in shock. then i called my own mother to aploize for any **** i put her threw at this age and asked her what she thought. As i am on the phone with her i get a in comming call. I switch over and its the friends mother... whom i am good friends with. She says i just wanted to tell you that the girls are not going by themselfs that the friends older sister 13 would be going aswell. she was just going to see a diffrent movie..
So with a sigh.... of relife that there would be some one older there. i gave in but i paced back and forth unil 8.45... Kids think they are so grown up.. But the funny thing is so didn't we....

I guess they're progressing. When I was a kid you didn't do that until you had a car! AT least guys. Guys as no gumsun until they had a car!

Of course I remember being 7 and my 6 year old neighbor girl who I was friends with kissing me on the cheek when they were screening movies at the school.

I am not sure. Lack of parenting I assume. My girls are 9 and 11 and they go out as 9 and 11 year olds.

Well it was around 35 yrs. ago that I was in 5th grade, I remember 2 of my classmates "getting married" on the steps of the school during lunch one fall day. So things have not changed that much.

On the way to a field trip last year I asked each of the girls (4th grade) riding with me who their boyfriend was. Each had one except one little girl who said, "I don't have one, if I did my Dad would kill me".

LOL. I have no idea. It's quite funny though. Little kids think they are sooooo in love and swear they've had like 4 boyfriends/girlfriends, when they don't even know what being in a relationship is REALLY like.

I agree . I don't get it either . What are parents thinking ? Or not thinking ? Kids that are trying to grow up too fast will only end up with adult problems way before they can handle them .
