Depending on where you live you could have it outdoors, at a beach or lake. Or even at a park. I've been to a few that we in people's backyards as well. If you're having a spring or summer wedding an outdoor reception would be beautiful. Try to incorportae water, gardens, and landscaping. Just hope for good weather.

I know some museums will rent out an area of their building for weddings and other banquets. Maybe you both love art or one of you is an anthropologist. A museum might be a great idea. Here are some others:
-An old mansion or historical building
-garden
-an orchard
-a national park
-on a boat
-the backyard
-a cave (I saw a show where a couple had their reception in a vineyard's wine aging area)
-a vineyard
-a renaissance fair

Nowadays you can have a reception anywhere. Just use your imagination!

Lots of love and luck!

In our city, we have historical mansions that rent space out for wedding receptions, there are also old theaters that will do receptions, the art museum does them, we even have an old train station that does wedding receptions. You can always go outdoors, but depending on where you live and the time of year, weather can be very unpredictable, so you'd need to make arrangements in case of bad weather. So there are plenty of places to host a reception, you just have to be creative. Good luck!

My niece just had her wedding at a beautiful golf couse (public) and the ceremony was outside. Then we went inside for the reception.
She was fortunate the weather was good, although there was a plan B in case it rained (a tent).

My sister just had her wedding outdoors in a friends yard (under a big tent). The day before was beautiful, but her day was cold, damp and drizzly.

That's the main problem with outdoor weddings, too unpredictable! Good luck whatever you decide!

There's always the church basement!

Park, beach, community hall, church hall... all good thoughts.

What about local historical buildings / sites? I've heard sucess stories with venues like that.

Or for something completely different, how about a restaurant? Find someplace with good food and a great ambiance. You might have to deal with a stricter timeline, but there are tons of issues already taken care of.

If you belong to a church...perhaps the church hall? If you live in the south and the weather is warm...how about an outdoor reception at a home with a nice yard. Or perhaps at a park with a picnic area.... and make it casual...

Research your area for historic homes that are open for the publics use. I got married in a old home and it was amazing, walking down the huge stair case. It is really beautiful and wont need much decoration b/c the home itself will be so beautiful. Its something to think about, unique and different. Good luck!

How about some historical site or other? A castle, a landmark, a building, a trainstation... or out in the middle of a big field? Or how about in a foreighn country, or on a boat/train?
