There are a few classes of antidepressants:
tricyclics, MAO Inhibitors, SSRI's, and some others that don't fit those categories.
Make sure his doctor has tried meds in all those classes to see if any are effective. If he's not seeing a psychiatrist to prescribe, it may be helpful for him to. Some people swear by over the counter St John's Wort. Some people benefit from increased sunlight. You can get a light box or full spectrum lightbulbs to see if that helps. Sometimes it's more than meds that will help depression, a good counselor or therapist can get at the root of why he's depressed and ways to avoid it in the future. If all else fails, his doc may recommend ECT (electro convulsive therapy) treatment, which sometimes is the only effective treatment for those with treatment-resistant depression.
Good luck, and take care...

I have been on medication almost my whole life and I am 40 I find some are better than others i tried cymbalta and it didnt help at all I like paxil the very best it seems to last the whole day It seems to keep me more level than others, but it has its drawbacks such as weight gain, and dry mouth I also have been on lexapro, welbutin, prozac, luvox, neurontin and a couple of others, the serotonin reuptake inhibitor pills work the best for me, i take 20mg of paxil first thing in morning, after a while I become immune to it and have to reduce dose or switch for a while but it works hope this helps you, goodluck.

My father has a severe chronic depression and it took him years to find the right meds. Sounds horrible, but it's normal, everybody reacts differently to different antidepressants. Don't give up hope, try for a bit longer and switch to another antidepressant if it still doesn't work after awhile.
You should talk about this with your husband and his counselor, though, medication alone NEVER cures a depression.

I was depressed for years and I believe my faith is what brought me out of it.

With meds you can get use to one certain one and have to start with something else. I was on 6 different things at one time now I am down to effexor only. I hope that since the depression has lifted that I can come off this last one.

Good luck Try to support him as much as you can it is not easy
