From what I have seen people that live so close together always compare each other. In the country you live farther apart and don't have to worry about what the neighbor thinks when he looks over the fence. In the city people also have gotten so that laws are passed to the point that they can complain about anything and send some type of authority after you (housing, animal, etc.) just because they don't like you. Plus from experience the children grow up being bored and so they go to look for things to do (not always the right things). So more people living closer together = more people trying to prove themselves = bigger egos.

My ego always feels like the middle child. The id is always running around causing trouble and the super ego is always lecturing and wagging its finger. Poor ego... trapped inbetween and nowhere to go!

City life is a life of competitions. People teach you to be assertive yet most of them learned more to be agressive than just simply being assertive. People now learned to protect themselves by not trusting the acts of humility but by putting shields around oneself and becomes less transparent to others. Fear of being judged as a loser and those who think of themselves as losers are mostly the one who look for other means to hide it.

I don't know. I live in the woods in a rural town and sometimes you have to act tough. (guns, hunting, pointing guns at people on your property...) We're not immune from ego in rural areas.

I've lived in NYC and it does take a certain confidence to get along in daily life. It can be rough. But people are also warm and caring once you are in their little group. People in the country can be warm initially, but talk behind your back etc.
