not enough parachutes to go round on a stricken aircraft would you sacrifice yours for the sake of someone else ?

No, two people can use one parachute each. One person wears the parachute, the other person faces the parachuter and locks their arms around the straps. The force of opening the parachute will break their arms, and the extra weight will most likely break both person's legs on landing, but that's better than being dead, or having the guilt of someone else's death on your conscience.

Man's basic instinct is to survive, so although I would like to say that I would give up my parachute, when the time came I think I would be as selfish as the next person.

Its a hypothetical question as they don't supply chutes on commercial planes,That said Yes I'm 58 had heart attacks stroke but had a good life in those circumstances its a chance for someone elses time to live.

I don't think you can know until you are in that situation. Another question is would you accept a parachute from someone else if they offered it to you?

I'd like to be able to say "yes" .. but in that intense moment of fear of what the plane crash might feel like .. as I am heading towards the ground at over 100 MPH .. I can't honestly say that I would want to give mine up. Of course, with the description you are giving . no one would be able to safely jump out of that plane anyways and everyone would most likely perish. Good Luck ! :)
