one of them is popular and i don't have the courage to talk to him
the other is my friend and we hang out. i don't know if i should ask him out. he is always talking to me, laughing at my jokes etc.
what to do??

well first you need to relize all the popular girls will hat eyou when you choose the popular guy so you will need a srtong friendship with him first and a trusting one so he doesnt believe the rumors.and if you do remember that your friend is very important so dont forget about him and make shure he is cool with you dating this other guy.
for your friend you need to choose, ask him if he likes you that way and think if it will feel wierd or not then you need to think about if it will ruin your friendship or is it stronger then the love bug? if not then you need to think if you really really like him then go for it. Either way it will be hard but what relationship isnt go with your heart and what feels right then dive in.

If you go out with the friend and he finds out you like the popular one, he will dump you and no longer be your friend.. is that worth the loss of a friend

It would be very very bad to start a relationship with someone simply because they're popular. Generally those types of relationships fail fast.
It's better to find someone you truly get along with, who can respect you, and who you can have fun with.
