Ford Escort.

Hard to average the price of a used car - varies with a whole lot of things including body damage or rust, actual mileage, condition. The older the vehicle, the easier it is to work on. The smaller the vehicle, the easier it is to reach all the parts - but might be too compact for a novice to learn.

Older pickup trucks. Any make. Hard to kill a good ol' truck.

Of course people are always going to say an import -- but the fact of the matter is that Asian automakers use recycled metals in their vehicles, which means you may have an aluminum block, but with tin and other crap alloys, which is why the head gaskets tend to blow on these cars (Civics, mainly) becuase of the fluctuations in heat in the engine causes the metals to expand and contract quickly (thanks to the tin).

In any case, when it comes to used cars, no one car is the best. Too many factors are involved. For one, who have to look at the driving habits of the previous owner, and if the car was maintained at scheduled intervals. Get the owner to show you all the bills for maintenance and repairs on that car. The milage will show on these bills (it should), that way you can determine if the car was cared for properly.

Most of your answers are right on target. I am a honda fan myself. But you need to stay on top of maintenance on any car you buy to extend it's life abd keep it's good mileage.
Before you buy, take a look at replacement costs for tires and what your insurance will be. Many people don't think of these things when looking at cars.

I had a 1986 Volkswagen Jetta once. I paid $400 for it, and it ran like a top for six years. The same car is still on the road, I see it sometimes.

I owned a great Nissan Stanza...held up well till I hit a deer...if you want American, I'd suggest Oldsmobile, if you can find one...

The price really will depend on HOW used, how old, and how many miles are on it...you could spend anywhere from $1000 up...

Ask your mechanic what he recommends...
