It says in the bible that God made Man in HIS OWN image. What image means in this case, is a different story. The bible is probebly referring to a more spiritual image rather than looks. For example, humans are the only living things on earth that have a soul.

I'm not sure about god's image, Australopithecus looked more like an ape ( I know we are apes without hair, but you know what I mean ) We came from them but we didn't look like them.

Obviously, Homo Sapiens is an evolved form of the Australopithecus..
but maybe God set down the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen (and others involved in life) so that eventually they'd combine and create "life", which, on a tiny flooded rock in one particular solar system (i.e. our planet), would eventually lead to the creation of a species which calls itself Homo Sapiens.
