If you're looking for software to organize and display your photos, Picasa is definitely my favorite. It also allows you to easily perform some basic editing on your pictures non-destructively (meaning you can always undo).
Adobe's new Lightroom is similar but gives you more advanced editing capabilities for things like batch editing. It's still in Beta and is free to use until the final version is released.
Finally, if you're really looking to do more photo editing and manipulation the GIMP is a great free alternative to photoshop.
