If you are serious about protecting your family at home - a pump 12 ga shotgun with oo buck shells is absolutely the way to go--- with a carry permit and for personal protection--- a 45 cal compact is best-- example Glock mod 36 --one shot from either of these weapons will do the job --pea shooters will get you killed --above all --be safe-- especially around children and hopefully you won't ever have to use one. Take care !!!!

Why did you post in genealogy?

What kind of protection?

In home I like the 12 gauge pump, mossberg, remington. You can use a differing variety of rounds depending on other people in the home, neighbors being very close, etc. It has stopping power and it is virtually fool proof. One key point is the psychological power. In the middle of the night you hear someone climbing through a window, when you rack a round into the chamber the sound is universally known and in most instances the perpetrator is making a hasty retreat from your property.

For automobiles, concealed carry I have a weapon I use exclusively, I fire it about 200-500 times a month and I am extremely accurate and fast with it. It has enough stopping power because the rounds are going down range right where I aim.

That is the key, get a weapon you can shoot accurately, every time, then practice, A LOT of practice until handling the weapon is second nature. Size really does not matter since the shot placement is more critical in a high stress situation. A little .22 with the correct placement will stop a person. I use a .40 S&W Sig 229 with a very good trigger job. It is not too big for me to handle.

when I was in Alaska I was on a tour with two very environmentally active guides. They were always telling us to not step on the flowers, etc.

So we asked them about protection from grizzlies and they got into a big fight - one said that a shotgun was best, and the other said a 44 handgun! hahaha

Basically, it is pretty hard to hit anyone with a handgun. Even if you go to the range and practice, then when you are in a life threatening situation it is a totlly different thing. THere was a famous incident where the champion police pistol guy went into a hostage situation to rescue the hostages and he pulled a gun on the bad guy when he was about six feet away. The cop fired six rounds before he even scored a hit. We had an incident in our city where the cops chased a carfull of crooks and fired about 100 rounds into the car. Fortunately, none of the rounds hit anyone because it turned out it was the wrong car! oops.

The bottom line is, a handgun is a nice toy, but unless you are really serious about practicing regularly, it probably wont do you any good.

I think a shotgun is a much better choice. Mainly because, first, the bad guy can see it and knows what it is, and if he has any sense that will make him run. Second, you have a much better chance of hitting someone with a long arm such as a shotgun than with a pistol. Third, if you miss, the round wont go through the wall into the next house and kill your neighbor or into the home of someone a half mile away. Fourth the damage done by a shotgun hit is much more likely to stop the bad guy onthe spot, rather than putting a hole in him which might kill him in a minute or two, but by then you wont care. Fifth, your imbecile nephew isnt going to sneak it out of the house in his jacket pocket to impress the guys at school.

Well, it depends on if you are carrying it with you or keeping it at the house. Get a shotgun for the house (I only recommend this if there are no children in the house!!), however, a .38 would do nicely as it will stop an intruder. Just remember one thing--if your house is being robbed and you shoot the intruder make sure the body is inside by the time the cops come then you get to claim self defense (a cop told that)

I would recommend a 9mm since it is medium sized and easy to handle for a novice user. I also recommend taking a firearm course to learn hot to safely use your firearm. You should also consult with your local law enforcement agency to see if they are offering any workshops on gun safety. This will give you a chance to learn the legalities in your area.

Depends on the circumstances. Most important is knowing how to correctly, safely, and responsibly use the firearm. I would suggest a mid-sized pistol, shuch as a 9mm, a .38, or a .357. Just remember to lock it up and keep safely away from children or idiot adults.

a berreta 9mm because it is big enough to do some damage and small enough to be conceiled... all that being said I wouldn't advise you taking the law into you own hands...
