This is a good question. I just called my cat, Bugsy on the phone and asked him why. This is what he said, and I quote.

"Several thousand years ago Kitty-kind did have a complete language as humans do. However, we discovered that an abundant vocabulary did not in fact facilitate communication. Rather we came to realize the more words we had, the more likely we were to confuse our messages. Arguments errupted constantly, violence and war was rampant. Our species teetered on the verge of extinction. It was then decided at the Great Feline Council of Cairo held in 2130 BC, that the cat language should be distilled down to a single word in order to ensure peace and tranquility. After much debate, the word MEOW was chosen. With over 3000 inflective pronunciations its meaning can be interpreted within a given context to communicate virtually every thought and emotion. In fact, it is currently held among the majority of modern Kitty Sapians that if Humans were to adopt a One Word Language, world peace would be theirs for the taking. Personally, I think the word "Aloha" has already given you a headstart. Oh, by the way, when are you coming home to feed me?"

Please note the above answer was obtained with the help of babelfish.altavista.com, Bugsy's actual verbatim answer was, "Meooow meoooow meeeeooow. Meeoow. Meeoowoow meeoww mmmeeeooww. Meow?"

They meow to communicate with each other and with you. When they meow at you the want something, if they are in the kitchen they want food or water, if they are by the front door they want outside. Or if they come and meow at you and jump on your head that means they want you to get up!

Why do cats meow?

Cats have 4 different meanings for "meow". If you listen carefully, you can hear that each meow is different.

* I'm hungry!
* I want to go out!
* Help!
* I want attention!

That is the sound they make, like how dogs bark or lions roar. They meow for some of the same reasons a baby cries--he's hungry, he wants your attention or just wants something from you.
