I received a Head of Household Audit Letter which basically is asking if I used the head of household filing status correctly. Never in my life have I received one of these letters but was wondering if I received it because someone else in my house used the same address as me when they filed their taxes and filed head of household as well. If so, what will the outcome be? The person who filed had no business using my address for their taxes much less filing for head of household. Any info. would be helpful.

If the letter requests specific information, return it with the info. If you get called in, tell the truth - sounds like you're clean on this, so you won't be in any trouble.

It might have just been routine - IRS picks certain categories each year to look at where there is known to be significant false filing. If someone else filed HOH from your address, but did not meet the requirements, theirs could be disallowed - they wouldn't go to jail or anything, but would have to pay taxes at the higher correct status, plus interest and possible penalties.

the address shouldn't matter as long you qualify for the head of household status.
From IRS publication 17 for 2005.

You may be able to file as head of household if you meet all the following requirements.

You are unmarried or “considered unmarried” on the last day of the year.

You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the year.

A “qualifying person” lived with you in the home for more than half the year (except for temporary absences, such as school). However, if the “qualifying person” is your dependent parent, he or she does not have to live with you. See Special rule for parent, later, under Qualifying Person.

Is someone using your SS# ? The address doesnt matter. Do u have a significant other living with u? and a child together? Before you contact IRS look into who is living with you. You could have numerous families living in same house as long as they pass the Support test they could all file head of house as long as they arent married and have their own qualifying child.

It appears you need to contact the IRS and explain your situation. You might want to talk to an accountant about it as well.
