No - definitely not.
We are three things - mind body and spirit.
Why do we have 'high-spirited' children.
There is no way can we conceive of our entirety without considering spirit as being a part of ourselves.
How was it determined when you would be conceived?
Where did the first human being come from?
Where did nature come from?

Thousands of questions which can be partially answered by knowing that spirit exists.
There is no alternative logical explanation.
If spirit exists, then it is logical that spirituality exists, and is therefore not sheer vanity.
Why do so many so called 'uncivilised and unintelligent' indigenous tribes have such high levels of spirituality?

Intelligentsia is defined as the intellectual elite of a society, genious by IQ standards as a whole. If you are asking if spirituality is the vanity of the intelligent, in general, my answer would be no. Spirituality is a belief based on some knowledge and a great deal of faith. The true intelligentsia of society, if you actually intended to use the word in its proper sense, in general, has rejected spirituality in exchange for the absolute evidence of science. This has been true of western society as defined in the term developed nations. In truth, I think intelligentsia grows more spiritual as science cannot clearly identify the origin of creation by pathology... but they will never admit this and it is a relatively recent development.

When spirtuality turns into a contest, then yes. What I mean is, when people go around letting people know, broadcasting how good they are, that they made donations to a charity, or they don't sin, or they're fasting, or they're humble. Or they go around condemning other people to hell and threatening them with God's punishment. When it gets to that point, they're just doing it for approval. Just look upon them with pity because they are neurotic. Pretty much the entire Catholic population is comprised of this type of person.
Now spirituality, authentic introspection without any pretenses, that is not vanity. This type of spirtuality needs no rule book (like the bible), needs no external guidance, needs no external validation, it is not a contest to see who can feign more virtue.

Vanity? Yes. Intelligentsia? Highly doubt it.

I don't think vanity and spirituality go together. Surely spiritual people are rejecting the trappings of the material world so they are rejecting materialism, pride, vanity and other negative emotions.

I used to know someone who was spiritually arrogant.
Ego cant have been killed off yet.
He annoyed everyone.
Spirituality to me is focusing on and feeding my spirit by refraining from what I call evil dark things.
Also religion would send me backwards.
Just my opinion.

I don't think so. One of the aspects of spirituality is about learning how not to be vain.

“The one who can adjust to any situation with humility possesses true greatness.”

Spirituality is innate in each of us, I believe. Perhaps, those you term "intlligentsia" have more motivation to explore it?
