Its like for one minute everyone I read seems so human and decent. I was very scared asking it, instant messaged a friend saying, this could blow up in my face.

You should be able to ask what you want with no judgement and your question was worded sincerely - I'm now guessing you're an American (from your low expectations of being attacked!) and maybe you got some open-minded English people answering your question (from your suprised reaction).
