The soaring price of energy, especially gas and gas products, has created a rising cost in nearly every single item we now purchase.
Also, there are now more restrictions on organic products. Wheat bread often contains grains that claim to be, and often are, organic. With more restrictions placed on the growing and distribution of organic products this has created an additional expense that is now passed on to the public.
I have noticed that of all the foods we purchase it is bread that has soared the highest. For the first time ever I am seriously thinking about getting a bread machine. I paid $2.50 for a loaf of bread at Target yesterday. I think that that price is too high.
If you are willing to change to white bread it can be found nearly anywhere for .99 cents a loaf.

Are you sure it's the same kind of bread? It costs the same amount to transport a cheap loaf than a more expensive loaf, so as transportation costs rise, it is more likely that the more expensive loaves will be the ones transported. I know there are fewer teenagers to work in the bakeries because of abortions. Two young bakery girls here quit and are working elsewhere for more money. So labor costs are up if we are going to get the work done at all.

I live in Los Angeles, and you can still get white bread for a buck. But wheat bread and honey oat and all that different bread with the grains and seeds in them.... it's always been around 4 bucks. It's worth it if you're on a health kick.

The price of oil. It costs more to transport the food to market. more to heat the ovens to bake it. more to heat the store who sells it.....and on and on...
It has caused EVERYTHING to go up and up and up. my grocery bill is significantly higher for the exact same items as I bought last year at the same small grocery store...
Learn to make bread yourself? I got a bread machine and set it up so it has bread ready in the morning , warm, when I awaken.
It is an investment, but it tastes better and you can have it with more pure ingredients...

Maybe because of the low carb trends. People stay away from bread items more often now. But that's a bit stretch for bread. I don't grocery shopping more often, but I know that's steep.
