$ 900-$1400 range

I'd stick with Canon or Nikon for the incredible range of lenses and accessories (in every price range) and the upgrade path for the bodies. I agree that the Pentax K10D is good value for money, but so is every Canon and Nikon, and Pentax makes less sense in the long run.
If $1400 is you maximum price for the whole kit, don't bother looking at +$1,000 bodies - it's better save a buck on the body than on the lenses because the lenses determine your image quality.
I agree with Panacea on the Canon XTi. As for the lens, I'd stay away from 28-200 zooms. For one thing, 28mm on a digital SLR is NOT really wide-angle, so it wouldn't be an all-in-one lens. Also, the convenience of mega-zoom lenses comes at the expense of image quality and low light capabilities.
I'd prefer the Canon 17-85mm zoom. This lens has the perfect range for indoors and street photography, it's vastly better than the 18-55mm kit lens, and at $510 it's simply the best lens there is for under a grand. If you find that the 17-85mm range is too limiting at the long end of the zoom, you can add a second lens later on.
So:
Canon Rebel XTi body:.......... $800
Canon 17-85mm zoom:.......... $510
2GB Sandisk Extreme lll CF:... $97
Total:....................................... $1407 (prices at B&H)
To cut costs but stick with Canon, get the Rebel XT body. B&H offers the Rebel XT with the 17-85 zoom as a package for $1100. Throw in the same memory card as above, and you're set for $1197.

That's an interesting price range...

Does your price range include at least one lens? If it does, the camera body would have to be somewhat less.

With a lens, I'd look at the brand new Nikon D80 or a Canon EOS 30D. Get an "upgrade" lens instead of the cheapest lens available.

I'm partial to Nikon, but admit that it's just a personal preference thing. Canon and Nikon are far and away the better brands to shop for.

Canon and Nikon have excellent camera in this range, However don't forget about the New Pentax K10D It rocks well over D70s/Rebel Xti/Canon 30D and almost as good as D200 Nikon.

I would check out the Pentax K10d, for that price range it has a lot of features, and a better kit lense then Canon or Nikon.

Canon Digital Rebel XTi (aka the EOS 400D outside the US). Buy it as the body only and buy this lens seperately for it:
