The default file formats are WMV (Windows Media Video & Audio), WMA (Windows Media Audio), and ASF (Advanced Streaming Format), and supports its own XML based playlist format called WPL (Windows Playlist).

SMPTE standard (421M, also known as VC-1), it's reasonable to believe that WMV has sufficiently evolved in a different direction than MPEG-4 to be considered a unique codec in its own right. There are currently (April 2006) 16 companies in the VC-1 patent pool. Microsoft is also one of the members of the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 patent pool.

Advanced Systems Format files(asf)

The video stream is often combined with an audio stream of Windows Media Audio and encapsulated in Advanced Systems Format files, carrying the .wmv or .asf file extensions.

Windows Media Audio (WMA) is a proprietary compressed audio ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ file format developed by Microsoft.

Advanced Audio Coding (acc) format used by Apple and is part o ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^of Microsoft's Windows Media framework.

It plays avi and mpeg 2. I know. I don't think it does mp4 but i'm not sure on that one

I'm pretty sure the K-Lite codec pack will play all of those.
