My 5 year old cat has always been a very affectionate cat towards everyone who pays her the least bit of attention. She gets along great with our other pets too, even our German Shepherd. But there has been a few times when I have had her outside with me and a neighborhood dog shows up and she will go in this defensive mode and if that dog so much as comes near me, she will freak out and attack the dog. I just assumed it was because she was protective. Since our daughter was born (3 years ago), i have found that the cat seems to get VERY emotional when our daughter would cry. She would run up and just seem very concerned like she couldn't figure out what was wrong. I have noticed that she get's this upset around other children when they cry too. Not only has she gotton upset when they cry but when they laugh or scream loud, when playing. Is my cat just overprotective or is she having some kitty anxiety problems? Anyone else have a cat like this??

My cat actually does the same thing. My husband and I get into one of our shouting matches and end up in a tickle fight where I scream from pain. The cat comes and bites my husband all the time trying to help me. That is the only time I see him jump into a fit. If my husband screams the cat can care less. I think it is really nice to have a cat that is empathic. Dogs are supposed to be that way too but my dog is too young to register that for now.

She is being both protective of you and your family as well as territorial. Female cats are more territorial than male cats and she was defending her territory when the neighborhood dog entered it.

Cats ears are very sensitive. When she heard the kids crying or making any other loud noise, it hurts her ears.

mother has a cat like that, and we took her to the doctor and found out that her eardrums were pretty bad. She could hear twice as loud as a normal cat would, so anyway with the dog part a lot of cats do that, but your cat must be very concerned with what happens to you and your family. I would suggest taking your cat to the vet to have a check up, it worked with my cat.

New things in a cats environment can be stressful for your cat. Sometimes they may react by protecting what they consider as their territory. Some cats may respond by spraying and some by diplaying nurturing characteristics. There is no reason to be alarmed unless your cats actions become undesirable or affect their health.
My Tom use to spray items when we brought them into the house - it was new to him and he thought he had to mark it as his - we used pheremone spray on a few items and found it to be effective and we were sure to praise him for behaviors we desired.
I found that our cats and house dog have become very attached to our children and will investigate when excitement escalates

My cat will do the same thing if Im crying, he'll run up to me and he acts all concerned.

Heres the thing....they are protective acting, and if they dont know the animal, theyll act defensive. They dont want another animal coming on their territory. They are very territorial.

Your cat is normal.

The American Short-hair breed are usually very territorial. They are the ones that people often refer to as tom-cats. Gray, black and white w/ stripes.

Probably also has some ear problems.

yes; my male cat does that too - i mean, run over all concerned-like when he hears one of my grandkids cry; or even when i scold my grandkids. Cats are very sensitive to feelings around them - emotions like anger, happiness, distress... I beleive your cat and mine pick up quickly on the "distressed" signal children "transmit" when they cry... so the cat goes over to see what's wrong. Isn't it awesome?

your cat accepts the other pets that are in your family...when a strange animal comes along that is a different story for her. she will protect the ones she loves..and your cat is sensitive and gets upset when your daughter cry.this is normal ..............

you could factor out on your roommate that Ethel's well-being will go through if she overeats and vomits consistently (i'd get this vomiting ingredient checked by making use of the vet, besides.) additionally that Mutmut desires peace and quiet to eat -- he desires to be fed in a separate section, or his digestion would be compromised. i'd ask a vet's advice -- DD will hear to a expert!
