Supposedly Catholic, but he is a member of a small special interst group called "Traditionalist Catholics" who try to live their Catholicism according to the rules before the Second Vatican Council (before the 1950's), and not necessarily according to the teaching of the Catholic Church today. The doctrinal beliefs of course are the same. Those never change. But many of the rules and ways of doing things are quite different, as are many aspects of the Mass.

PaulCyp got it right. Mel's father, Hutton Gibson, has created his own version of Catholicism, but Mel doesn't admit to being a follower. Since Vatican II, the Catholic Church has become more tolerant of others, including Jews. The Gibsons will have none of it!
The movie, "Passion of the Christ" was a fundraiser for his father's "church."

Just kidding. I couldn't believe how he indulged the criticism about his movie, and made such a butthead out of himself.
