I'm 23 years old and going for my Behind the Wheel test at the Hawthorne DMV in Torrance on Monday. My question pertains to that of needing insurance. What I wanted to know is do I (as the person who is going to be taking the test. Right now I have no insurance on myself whatsoever.) need to have any type of insurance before I take the test, or does the car itself have to be insured? Right now my mother wont let me use her car for this test, but a friend of mines who is insured is letting me use his (he'll be going with me when I go to take it. What I wanted to know, would this be enough to allow me to take the test, or do I literally need to be under the vehicle insurance to be able to use the car for the test itself? I was looking at the question posted here

And it seems that as long as the vehicle is insured, then there is no problem, but I wanted to get it all cleared regardless.

Thanks to whoever can answer

You would be fine. Only the car needs to be insured, with the vin number showing on the insurance. Just double check that it is current (people come in all the time with outdated insurance without realizing it).

Good luck on your test!

you are correct. the car is insured by your friend and is legal for you to take your drivers test. no insurance company will insure a un licenced person. i hope you pass your test.

You are covered by your friend's insurance as long as you are driving the car with his (or her) permission. Should be no problem.

I live in north CA. You do have to show proof. Doesn't matter whose car it is though. I did it. I borrowed my roommate's car.
