A pet peeve is something small that irritates you to no end (but it usually doesn't irritate the rest of the world).
My pet peeves include roommates that don't understand that they are renting a room and not the entire house, people who don't put the electrodes back on the cardiac monitor after using it, and people who give up animals without a really good (death in the family, serious illness) reason.

Something you just absolutely hate and refuse to tolerate. I have several. I cannot stand those who lie, chew with their mouths open, and people with bad body odor. It infuriates me beyond belief. For those who lie...I have to ask why? Make it a point to make them aware that I know the truth and I don't trust them. For those who chew with their mouth open, I will either stop eating and watch them until they ask "what?", so I can tell them, or I will excuse myself and go and eat in another room while making a point that their table manners are equivelant to the dogs, and for those that have body odor....shower people...use deoderant....it's not that complicated....a little soap goes a long way.

Now...all that....is what a pet peeve does to you. I'm normally not that neurotic about anything, and I'm rather laid back....but throw those things at me and it's like a completely different person takes over. Like I said, pet peeves are just something you can't tolerate. It's beyond just dislike....it's those things that drive you to insane behavior.
