Fortunitely most of the sites in Istambul are on the same street and only a few blocks from each other. The Blue Mosque is really cool and it is right across the street from the Haighia Sophia. Behide the Haighia Sophia is the Topkopa Palace. I thought the Haram there was interesting. And then if you continue up to the next block you will find the Hippodrom which was the old chariot race track and the Under ground Cistern which is strange to see. A few blocks up the street from that is the Grand Bazaar but I would have to say I have seen better markets. If you haven't been to the middle east or any where like that then you might find it fascinating.

Personally though I really enjoyed seeing the Topkopa Palace to get a feel for the old ottoman empire and then I took a 10 minute cab ride to the Domobache Palace (by the way I don't think I am spelling half of these things right) which looks more like Cinderellas castle then the home of an Ottoman Salten and his haram so it is interesting to see.

There are plenty of day tours offered of Istanbul that might satisfy your needs though.

Forget all the palaces and museums, anyway one day isn't enough! Go to Ortakoy (eat Kumpir-baked potato and view Bosphorus!), Dolmabahce(not the palace, just walk around)Karakoy (visit Tophane to smoke waterpipe!). the next stop is Taksim, Istiklal Street (Istiklal caddesi in Turkish), If you want to give a break and eat something, go to Cicek Pasajı or Nevizade.
Make absolutely a ferry trip over Bosphorus, for this you should go to Eminonu. The ferry stop is there..
You can eat fish (absolutely Lüfer!!) and drink Raki at dinner, the best restaurants are at Bosphorus (for instance in Yenikoy,Arnavutkoy;Bebek...). But be careful Raki is a strong drink, it would be better, if your hotel is near:) If you need help, you can send me an e-mail.
Have fun in Istanbul..

See Aya Sofia (closed on Mondays) and The Blue Mosque. If time allows, see the Grand Bazaar.
