what do make your dog?

Was just looking to fix something for my babies (7 yo and 3 1/2 month Italian Greyhounds) that are on medications and not too hungry for their own food, thought I'd ask you all what you feed when your dogs are "under the weather". Thanks for all the great answers!

Thank you all for your great answers! I made my 2 sick Italian Greyhounds some nice, healing chicken soup made from a whole organic chicken, carrots, taters, corn, peppers, celery and some rice. They ate it up when their own food seemed to be hurting their throats (had coughs) and made giving them their meds a little easier as a little bread with butter disguised the pills each had to take. One knows how to disembowl anything to get the pill out. Both are back to eating their own food. Thank you for all the great suggestions, wish I could all of you who took the time to answer, but am going with the one that seemed to have some experience with it. Again, THANK YOU! My puppies thank you!

If your dog isn't eating or dog food wont stay down, boil some chicken, separate it from bone, cook rice in the broth and serve it to your pet. Chicken & rice will be the only food a sick dog can dyjest and ceep down. For about 3-4 days, then start mixing it with his dog food when he starts feeling better to gradually wing him off the home food.

well, it all depends on what kind of sick youre talking about. if its just an upset stomach, i have a wonderful trick. feed them pumpkin. i dont mean like the whole pumpkin, you can buy cans of mashed pumpkin at most grocery stores. now depending on the size of your dog will determine how much to give him/her. always give them less of the pumpkin than you would theyre normal dog food. and only feed it to them twice a day (if theyll eat it--chances are they will eat it though). the end result may be an odd color but most likely your dog will feel better too! we use this technique all the time at my job (a boarding kennel) it works wonderfully! the problem with beef and rice (specifically the beef) is that it tends to be too greasy for the dogs to handle.

good luck!

Depends what's wrong with it.

If it's just had a bit of diarrhoea or vomiting, but is fine otherwise, ie. bright and happy, starve for 24 hours, just offer water, and then put on a bland diet of chicken, rice and scrambled egg for a couple of days. Then gradually put back onto normal food. If however, it's still vomiting or passing diarrhoea when being starved, see vet -could be a problem.

If it's ill for some other reason, there are various diets that can be prescribed by your vet, ie. kidney diet for dogs with kidney disease, liver diet for dogs with liver disease etc.

Dogs are the very same as children. They will eat when they are hungry. Chill a bit, your precious pooch will be fine. Once you took her to the Vets with the runny poo, you did the right thing. If she used to eat the food before, and got new food, and now back to the old, she's just being fussy. She will eat, once she's hungry enough. No slipping her bits of your grub now! If you are really that worried, take her back in straight away, but I promise she will be fine.

What is it that is making your dog sick? I had a dog that had severe diarrhea once and we gave her boiled rice with lamb. Dogs stomachs can be upset easily and giving them something they are not used to eating can also upset them. I would suggest asking your vet.

When dogs are sick they tend to eat grass. I don't know why, but it must make them feel better. I hope your dog gets better soon.

When my babies (dogs) are sick I make them chicken and rice. It's a bland meal that's easy on their tummies, yet it is very tasty to them.
