Had a similar problem with a Japanese car.

When you press the brake pedal, a switch comes on which activates a solenoid to release a lever making it possible to shift from park. At the same time, the brake lights come on. If the two (brake lights AND gear shift) are not working, it may be the switch itself or the fuse controlling them.

That was a Japanese car. It may or may not be the same with a ford crown.

As others have said, either the switch for the brake light is going or the wiring at the switch itself... Actually you probably wound up blowing a fuse while you were at it too.

and the recalls that someone mentioned, was to replace the brake switch from a problematic plastic one to the style you have on your car now

You probably need a new BOO (brake on/off) switch. This switch has been a recalled and replaced on other Ford models. The new switch on some models, comes with an updated switch with the updated harness that needs to be spliced in to the existing harness. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Either a fuse or a brake light switch is bad

Fix the brake lights first, if they don't work it won't get out of park

I would guess your brake switch on the pedal isnt working, thats why you have no brake lights also

Check break light fuse (simple) or have someone check break light switch on break pedal.

Had that problem once, I sprayed WD40 into the gear shifter. Check your transmission fluid.
My mechanic forced it into place while I watched. (huh?)

Then call a mechanic if still have a problem.
