I have a pet door, and she goes out. The yard is fenced so I am not afraid she is gone, but maybe got into something she can't get out of or got hold of a snake or rat. What can I do to make her come when I call her, other than tease her by rattling my keys then she thinks we are going for a ride.

all you need to do is work with her for about a week, say the dogs name followed by "come" only say these two words, start out with her in the house when she comes praise and reward with treat. she will quickly learn that when you say "puppy come" she will be praised and perhaps get a treat. if your dog is picky try different treats to see what she responds best to.

Our dachshund did the same thing. She'd see us flailing our arms around in the doorway, yelling her name to come in, and calmly look away and keep hunting. We used the pennies in the pop can trick. It worked the first time. My husband went out into the yard with the can and called her name. When her back was turned, he threw the can close enough to startle her but not hit her. She didn't know where the heck the can came from, but she flew into the house. It scared the living daylights out of her. Now all we have to do is call her name and shake the can and she comes running. Personally, I wouldn't use a doggy door. With the way our little one likes the outside, we'd only see her for meals! :)

We need to keep going on our obedience training, too. She was a rescue, so we're trying to undo some of the stuff the previous owners taught her and things they neglected to teach her.

Good luck!

You don't say how old your dog is, but if you are leaving her where she can get into snakes and rats, I'd say its not a good place to leave her. I would try having some treats in my hand. When she comes, reward her with a treat. Try not to make it that every times she comes she is "punished" by being made to go indoors when she doesn't want to. Try just rewarding her when she comes, then using it as a step to coming indoors, where she gets maybe another treat. Sometimes, small behavior changes can be made using SMALL treats. Good luck with her!

Right now she feels she can come and go as she pleases. Maybe you should lock the doggy door (when you are home) and make her come to ask you to go out. That way she knows that you are the one to go to when she needs to go out. When you are not around she may come and go as she pleases, but this way you are in control of that door way. This should give you some peace of mind since you are establishing dominance. Please keep in mind a dog likes to feel as if he or she is a member of the pack. By you setting that boundary, she willl come to you as a pack leader. Good luck!
