Exodus 20:5 - refering to those who don't believe

Exodus 20:5 Deuteronomy 5:9 The second is a repetition of the first. Exodus was the first giving of the law; Deuteronomy was the second giving of the law. These commandments have to do with idolatry. Idolatry is putting something else before God, that is, worshiping something unworthy. It is a sad fact that sins in families sometimes get handed down to succeeding generations. If your parents had problems, you will likely be susceptible to similar ones. Alcoholism is good example. I admit though, the verse is a bit mysterious.

As a nation, the sins of the parents would effect their offspring.

this is because, Jehovah would use the surrounding nations to punish his unfaithful people, causing even the children to suffer.

on the other hand when the parents were faithful then the children recieve the blessing also.

Exodus 20:5

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

Ah, such a nice & just God, don'tcha think? Even if you are pious & lovely, if your grandfather was a dick you're screwed!

I heard one interpretation of this: because we are raised repeating the lifestyle, habits and way of thinking of our parents (esp. back then), we repeat the things the way they did them, thus perpetuating the 'sinning' style. Just one understanding...

"visted" is not a word so the phrase doesn't make any sense.
