It is the unit flag which originated long long ago when soldiers marched into combat in line, they could look to their guidon (or colors) and allign themselves into the battle order. Capturing another units colors was considered huge and very desirable thus they were protected at the cost of life and limb.

It's guidon. It is a unit flag (normally that of the platoon and company) designed to be both a signalling device as well as a distinction emblem of the unit. It is less than a flag, actually, since a flag is classified as a unit "color" or that identifying a battalion, regiment, division or group.
