I work for charities for a living. Non-profit work is amazing.
If you're motivated, then all you need to do is listen. What is going to be classified as a positive influence on the lives of others? You aren't going to change a person completely, but you can always listen.
Let's say there's a homeless person. Bring a couple of sandwich, drinks, and sit down beside him/her and just talk. You don't have to witness or try to fix their problems. Just listen. S/he probably hasn't had someone CARE about anything for awhile.
Donate food and clothing, work at homeless shelters, learn to mentor. Don't just give out money for the sake of giving out money.

Charity works only if you put your soul into it.
That means, giving money might help but not really. In most of the cases, if you talk to those people and teach them something that can bring a significant long-term change to their lives - you get all ten points on charity, dude!
:)
Not everybody has money to give, but they still may give attention and care, which is: invaluable!

by making themselves role models towards others and making others want to be more like the person setting a good example.
God is always watching and he always knows but if you are setting a good example that is cool and people will see Christians as cool.
Yea I've had plenty of ideas some as simple as lemonade stands that give profits to charity.

Try to approach them by making a joke, that'll brake the ice.
then, let them know that we all make mistakes in life; But those mistakes should be considered experiences and not mistakes, cause the experiences we've had in life is what makes us the tipe of people we are today. Let them know also tha everything is a test, is up to you to say who's test. I like to say that is a life's test (that way the'll be no religious confrontation). There's a path we all gotta follow, sometimes we don't like it, sometimes you think you can't bear it, But somehow you always manage your way out of it...

If you want to do something for people with mental illnesses, HIV/AIDS, the disabled, women in abusive relationships, etc., that would be wonderful. I would not work with the homeless, it is too dangerous.
