I have a dog that was using toilet training pads and sometimes having accidents in the apartment, but just stopped using the pads, and picks specific places to "go" in the apartment. I usually spend the entire day with him, but I can never catch him when he is actually "doing it" and only find it last second. I am getting frustrated as hell because for all the foward progress I am making with him, he seems to be regressing backwards. He is only over 3 months old. What am I doing wrong?

Yup- I'd change where you've been putting the pads. Put them in the new places he's using.

How are you cleaning up after him? Pick up the solid stuff, soak up the wet stuff. Then shake baking soda over the area- it absorbs moisture and the odor that attracted him to that spot in the first place. Let the baking soda sit for a couple hours, then vacuum.

I house-broke my dogs. Get a kennel- needs to be just big enough for Pup to stand up, turn around and lay down, but not much bigger. Psychologically, the kennel needs to be like a kid's room. it's where he can go to be alone. It's his safe place. NEVER EVER discipline him while he's in there (dump/drag him out first... ).

The first time, lure him into the kennel with treats, etc. Teach him the command- "Kennel"- he should go into the kennel.... Shut him in the kennel when you're not home. This will prevent accidents while you're gone. Dogs won't go where they spend a lot of time, sleep, etc. Let him out and lead him to... whatever potty-spot you want (I take my dogs outside.) immediately. Wait for him to do his business, and then- LOTS-O-PRAISE, treats, petting. Just love on that dog like he's done the greatest thing ever!!!!

Keep at it... Best of luck

Just had another thought- maybe he's coming into his sexual maturity... is he marking? is he fixed? This could help control his "manly" showing off....

Ok, just remember that he is still a puppy. A baby yet. When was the last time you had him to the vet ? He could have something medically wrong with him. If you rule out everything medical, then perhaps it is a behavior problem. Try putting the pads on the new places he seems to want to go. You may have pads all over the place for a bit tho. I've never had a dog, but I have had cats that sprayed and did their business where they weren't supposed to. Ask your vet for advice. They won't steer you wrong, I'm sure.

First thing to remember- he is still a baby!! My dog was 6 months old when he finally stopped going in the house. Potty pads NEVER worked for me- but my bully is as stubborn as a board. I would try taking him out every 1-2 hours and stay out with him for about 5-10 minutes, I know its a lot but it works! Now when my baby would go inside, even if I would not catch him in the act, I would still rub his nose in it and tell him "NO", then put him in his kennel for about 10-15 minutes, I would clean his mess up, then I would take him outside again. He will catch on that he is suppose to be going potty outside NOT inside- things will get better!! Good luck and be patient!
