I have cut the toenails of our cats and dogs through the years with no problems. We now have a 12 wk old beagle and when I clip his nails - tips only, I know, so, no I am not clipping too short - he yelps and whines like it hurts. There aren't nerve endings in the tips of a beagles nails are there? Or is this just his own pet peeve? (pun intended!)

Make sure the nail clippers and nice and sharp because sometimes the pressure from the clippers can cause a little bit of pressure that he may find is displeasing depending on his pain tolerance. It is the same for our nails and if you cut into the white part then we are going to feel it and we are going to bleed just like them so yes it hurts if they are cut too short but i a little bit of pressure when they are being cut normally because they have thick nails and you really have to reef on the clippers to cut them .

It must hurt him for some reason
Maybe the clippers are a bit fierce and twist the nail.

Whatever it is if your dog shows pain *STOP *
I know this is a nuisance ,
Bu take him to the vets for this very basic care ,

but if clipping his nails does hurt, there is always a good reason,
You can be sure he is not "putting "it on ,

There are no nerve endings at the top part of the nail
But with a small puppy, the part between the "quick" with nerve endings & the nail bed can be deceptivly short .,

the the actual nail ,may be very close to the nerve endings .
it is so easy to miss and give a pianfull nip .

The worst feature, is that it can make the dog FOREVER fearful, of having his nails clipped .

This imprinting is also a good reason, to see the vet and prevent the fear, from building up in your puppy

If you are being careful not to cut too short and get into the quick of the nail, your puppy is probably just not used to having his paws touched (much less clipped) and you'll just need to be gentle and spend extra time touching his paws while he's not under any stress to desensitize him to having his paws touched. This toenail clipping is very new to him, so patience and time should gradually help him out.
Good luck to you and your puppy!

I would never cut a cats nails unless he was never out side, but you did get me to thinking. Also have cut toenails thru the years. I now have a 10 month old part basset hound and beagle. He doesn't whine but he does keep jerking his paws away. Dogs nails are like humans, if you cut too high it will hurt and bleed. I cut only the tips so maybe it is a trait of the breed.

It sounds like you know how far to clip. No there are no nerve endings in the tips. It is just like cutting your own nails. Since he is so young it is probably just scaring him. Either the noise or the feel. Beagles tend to be babies, but are so very cute. With time he will probably get use to it, once he realizes you are not hurting him. I hope this info helps.

as soon as mom lets you hold them. I started mine at 3 days old. My Mama was OK with me right away but some are not. Just hold them on there back this also teaches you are dominate. Or set them on your lap if they are bigger. You can start clipping with human toenail clippers so you don't take much off. Darlene s

honestly, its a beagle thing. they tend to be whiners when it comes to their feet and nails. the only thing i can recommend is to play with his feet a lot. start out slow though. like five minutes a day for a few days then 10 minutes, then 15. just work slowly. its not a guarantee but it may help a little. most likely he will do it for the rest of his life. good luck though!

No but if you clip to far the nail will bleed. He problay is just whinning because he doesnt like you clipping his nails. My dogs hate it if your dogs have white nails it is easy to clip you can see were you clip to deep black nails are harder.

Well, as long a your not cutting the quick, or accidentally pulling on the nail as you cut (or him pulling his paw away as you cut), then he probably just needs to get used to having his paws handled.
