Honor!!! Pride!!!! Balls!!!! Brains!!!!! Respect!!! The American people are only interested in what THEY have or can get!!! They don't give a crap about anyone or anything as long as there cell phone, laptop, and other useless toys work. The average American lives well above their means thus they live off their credit cards. The average American is so afraid of being outdone by the folks down the street they can't relax and enjoy life. As for the political issue it's all about the MONEY. You best believe the people on capitol hill don't give a rats *** about the average American. The American government is run by TWO branches of government (1) Insurance (2) Pharmaceuticals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the reason America will never find a cure for Cancer, Aids, and other such diseases. It's the governments way of financing itself. Lobbyist contribute millions the the candidate of THEIR choice to insure their profit. It was not the people of New York that elected Sen. H. Clinton, nor the people of North Carolina that elected Sen. E. Dole They paid their way into office with lobbyist MONEY!!! In this century the American government is no better than the thieves they represent. Many years ago during the cold war the U.S. was terrified of the Russians. The Russians lived by a different philosophy. There was no need to fear America, leave them alone and they will destroy THEMSELVES. Need I say More???

The moral and political backbone we once had. Now everything has to be politically correct, it's wrong to offend anyone, yet a woman can have an abortion and it's perfectly fine. Even worse, the politicians are the ones who are directing where the country is going when it should be the people doing this. Too many citizens think they don't need to care or be involved in public life - it makes you wonder what the founders, many of whom lost their fortunes or even their lives to secure our freedom, would say if they could see the apathy in the American populous. On the other hand, there are people who vote, but don't bother to learn anything about the candidates or issues until a couples days before the election, see someones add on TV and think "That sounds good or they seems sincere so I'll vote for that/them." These people are worse than the people who don't vote because they vote irresponsibly.

Americans are failing to teach their kids respect. They dress sloppy, their language is atrocious, they have poor manners, and they ignore rules and regulations. The schools are blamed for a lot of the problem but they don't get the kids for the first five years and by then, the pattern has already been set at home. Teachers can only do so much with what comes through the door. If they've seen it, heard it, and got by with it at home, they will try it at school. Respect is best taught in the home by respectful adults. It's got to start there and it isn't happening.
To your question about making politics better: we have an election coming up. Vote out anyone who's not doing a good job. Get rid of as many career politicians as possible. Let candidates know by your vote that if they don't perform their duties responsibly, you'll be sending someone else to do it!

American politics has become no better than daily soaps. No longer are the political parties interested in serving America and making it better, they are only interested in being the winning party and having the ability to humiliate the other side. We as citizens cannot decide who to vote for because once they get into office all bets are off. We as citizens have lost control of our country to the very people entrusted to speak with our voice.
Also, we as a nation have forgotten that the main reason we are in this country. We came here for freedom, low taxes, less government, to believe as we wish without our neighbor's input, and to pursue happiness. I'm tired of hearing that someone has their feelings hurt because someone else has a symbol on a building or in a yard. Or that they don't agree with an idea therefore no one can and they use our legal system to force others to their will.
If you don't like or have an allergy to broccoli, are you phobic about veggies or do you just have a preference? For one who does not appreciate broccoli it would be quite disturbing to constantly be subjected to it. I don't care if you like broccoli, wallow in it, use it for everything, just don't get weird if I don't want to see it or join in.

Whats lacking? Morals, common sense, integrity. And that is just on the voters part. Want to fix the problems? What will do it?
People could make a huge difference by the following. Start worrying about what it right, not simply what they want or like or what feels good. If you and your neighbors for instance were to start actually doing what is right and moral instead of doing what you like, what gets you what you want all the time, what makes you feel good in particular instances, it would solve the problems. Actually being honest, with yourselves would help. AND THEN REFLECTING THE ABOVE THINGS IN YOUR VOTES AND WHAT YOU REQUIRE OF YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS.
Voters simply vote for who will do what they like or want or who will give them what they desire. These voters dont worry about what is good for America or what is right or moral or ethical, nor do the politicians. Basically, a lot of voters only want hand outs and will salute any flag if it pays them. The politicians only want the votes and they dont care what they must harm to get them, aside from themselves.
Understand, this wont happen. Just a pie in the sky thought.

Protection. I tell you, I am afraid. My children and I are not safe at school. I think we let loose with the internet,, games, other technology, too soon. There is too much freedom, a flood. Way, way too much stimulation and visual, auditory, fantasy for children and for men, who become violent toward women sometimes as a result of the saturation of sexual material to sell. This makes women more objects than they were 100 years ago. I am way way left, politically, but our problems cross party lines these days.
My brother, a Navy officer very high up, will retire very strategically to an area where he can self-sustain, more than 100 miles from the nearest population center of more than 1000. We are making plans to do the same---terribly scary.

US society lacks compassion, integrity, sense of fairness and justice, a concern for American the poor, elderly, disabled, the homeless, the disenfranchised, the marginalized, a sense of honor and respect; we lack pride in our work and a sense of excellence from out educators that can no longer teacher because they cannot speak or write up to par with educators of the past; we need civil servants that are not rude, crude and ignorant, inept, incompetent and malfeasant; we need honest elected officals with high moral values not demagogues; we need an intelligent President (not a rodeo clown that the entire world makes fun of because of his silver-plated foot-in-mouth disease); we need to learn to care for our fellow human beings that share this world, a concern for our environment over profits, etc.
We need to hold our elected officials, our civil servants, educators, police, elected officials at EVERY level accountable and every paid government personnel (police, FBI... ALL) for their actions and dismiss and prosecute if necessary if they are found to be dishonest or lied to the public while campaigning or holding office or employed (even if they commit the misdeed after work hours).

A sense of caring for those less fortunate than us, a commitment to public education, respect for the beliefs of those different from ourselves, support and respect for the military who defends us, knowledge of world affairs, open minds, a desire for consensus for the common good, agreement to let go of pork barrel politics in favor of the common good, and a sense of humor.
Even with all that would make us better, we still enjoy the best opportunities available on the planet. When people like you ask questions like the one you posed, it reminds me that together we can keep those opportunities alive for our children.
