matting problems with a long haired cat?

2006-09-24 05:18:20 · 5 answers · asked by Anonymous in Pets Cats

She is an old kitty (18 years old) and has stopped grooming herself. She is blind and We do not want to put her down at this time. She still makes it around our house as long as we do not move things around. She still eats well and has been to the vet and he says that she is fine, no medical problems except for being blind.

You have to start at the end farthest from the skin, and use a wide tooth comb. You gradually work your way closer to the skin, then use a finer tooth comb.

Good luck getting your cat to sit still for it though. A lot of groomers sedate them, or just cut the mats out.

What a wonderful kitty! I have a 22 yr old cat that does not groom herself and she goes monthly or at least every six weeks to a professional groomer for a comb out and bath. My Cameo is stone deaf now (how many cats can you run the vacuum around and not have them split). Otherwise Cameo is very perky and enjoying life.

If you can get a copy of "The New Natural Cat" either by purchasing or from a library Anitra Frazier has a whole chapter on bathing and grooming cats. She started out as a professional groomer. It is a wonderful and extremely popular book published by Penguin Books, NY. You should have no trouble finding a copy. It's a $16 book so not terribly expensive. The grooming chapter has diagrams too.

If she is matted to the skin or the mats feel lile felt, she will need to be shaved. That is the least painful BUT at her age, you must have the shave done by a vet. Most groomers will not touch such an elderly cat.

I'm not a professional groomer but I got this tip from someone who is.

Use a Zoom Groom. You can get them at pet shops. A Zoom Groom is soft rubber brush with big, widely spaced conical "bristles." They don't look like they'd be very effective but they work great!
