you don't have to get rid of it. but taking it out of the house 5 min. before your dad arrives won't work either because pet dander will be left behind and that is what your dad is allergic to.
if your dad lives nearby and comes over often i suggest allergy medicine
however if your dad lives far away and visits only every once in a while maybe taking the cat out of the house (and leaving it with a friend) a day before and vacuuming up the couches, carpet and curtains would help. this way none of the dander that your dad is allergic to will be left around and he won't experience an allergic reaction. this is too much work if he comes over a lot and that's why i suggested allergy medicine or shots if he comes over a lot.
even if he does visit often vaccuming and bathing the cat will also help a little.

Febreeze. I use it at least every other week, sometimes weekly when I remember. Our church is so small we are meeting in our home right now, and I can't put the whole couch in the washing machine ... LOL Also - wash the dog bedding frequently. Add Febreeze for laundry (I forget exactly what it's called) if you need to. Vacuum frequently, using a powder pet deodorizer first. Arm & Hammer makes one that is really good. You sprinkle it into the carpet, let it sit for 15 - 20 minutes, then vacuum up. Bathe the dog every 2 - 3 weeks, if possible. You might not get rid of all the odor, but all of this combined will help a lot.

I have 3 dogs and they are like my children. The ONLY reason I would ever get rid of any of my animals would be if they were to aggressive. If your father is allergic to animals make sure your cat is closed off in another room get an air purifier and vacuum very well before he comes over. You shouldn't have to get rid of your pet just because someone is allergic. If your father was allergic to you does that mean you would have to stay away?

If it were you or someone living full-time in your house, I would say that you should get rid of the pets. Same for if your father needed to move in with you for some reason. However, I would not get rid of pets just so that someone can visit, even a parent. You've already gotten a lot of good suggestions, depending on the severity of the allergy.

Your Dad knows you have a cat. I'm sure he hasn't given you an ultimatum - me or the cat - so why would you think this needs to be an option? If your dad has chosen to visit, he knows there are steps HE needs to take, you just need to make sure you clean really well and don't forget the furniture cushions! Start about a week early getting your cat used to the fact that it can't have complete run of the house - at least while dad's there. Cats can adapt quite easily if you work with them. I know - been there, done this. Wasn't really a problem.

Never! Do NOT get rid of the poor kitty. Think about it this way: You could go to your dad's house, not the other way around. Think about how your cat would feel. You love them for two years, and then boot him out the door. No, keep your cat. Maybe if your dad would come visit, just put the cat in your room or something. I hope this helped you, and GOOD LUCK!!!

I am such an animal advocate, I have to say no. There are plenty of anti-allergy products available on the market today. There are dander remover sprays and wipes that when used every day reduce the amount of dander on your cat. For a week before your dad comes to visit, use the dander remover every day on your cat, you can even spray it on your carpets, furniture and curtains the day he is to arrive, and vacuum thoroughly. Don't let your cat in the guest room, ever, and put an air purifier in there so your
Dad has an allergy free zone to get away to.

my cats are my babies and I wouldn't get rid of them if I was allergic so I sure wouldn't do it for someone visiting. Have your dad take an allergy pill before he comes or you could board them for the length of his stay. But to get rid of them completely because your dad is coming to VISIT is a little extreme

My mom is highly allergic to my cat. But this is OUR home, and my cat if FAMILY. She loves him too, just gets sick if she is around. Taking the cat out of the house may not alleviate the problem, my mom gets sick whether the cat is around or not because his fur, dander or whatever is in the house. My mom chooses not to come over here that often, but when she does she takes allergy medicine first.

No. Your cat lives there, too. You wouldn't get rid of kids, plants, carpet, or anything else he might be allergic to. Keep the cat in your room while he is there. He might still have allergies, but its a compromise.
