How often? and for how much?
Or is this an urban myth. I've looked on a search and can't see any answers.

I've heard of 5 years quoted now 10 thats not long really considering how much they cost. My ex wife still uses that hitachi i bought second hand in 1988 for £80. I will stick to CRT. bulky but good!!

Yes the screen is filled with gas. Yes it will eventually leak out and become useless. No you can't fill the gas back up; once it's gone the TV is junk.
Gas loss has been greatly reduced in newer models and some manufacturers are suggesting a projected lifespan of over ten years.
What will happen is that the screen will just get dimmer and dimmer at an imperceivable rate. You won't notice it. One day you'll say "gee the TV isn't as bright as it was when I first got it". That will be the time to start looking for a new one...

This is true, Plasma TVs only have a life of about 5 years. That amongst other reasons is why they are cheaper than LCDs

dude.thats not true,but cute. your plasma tv set ,on average run about 60000 hours(abt 24 yrs) so dont worry. NOW FOR YOU AMATUERS,IF YOUR PLASMA REALLY WENT OUT IN FIVE YEARS,YOU NEED A BETTER SALESMAN.TIPS TO MAKE YOUR PLASMA LAST A LONG BEAUTIFULLLIFE.
1.dont keep the contrast on its highest setting,keep it at about half.
2.make sure you have a surge protector(not a power strip), thats rated at least 1000 joules.
3.and if you have money,get a power regulator.
4.stop listening to non professionals.

Current life of plasmas is estimated at 60,000 on-time hrs, same as LCD.

They do de-gass - but they cannot be 'topped' up in the traditional sense. (Only at a manufacturing plant)
It'll be cheaper to buy a new TV when the time comes.
