Is it really safe and smart for me to stay at the Vanderbilit YMCA in New York City,NY? I am concerned because I will be traveling with my teenage child. Just need a comfortable place to stay while visiting the city.

The Vanderbilt YMCA is located in an awesome area. It has a full-service gym and pools on several floors. There's plenty of nice people around all the time. Alot of young professionals are members of this Y, as I am.
As a native New Yorker who have travelled the world and all over the U.S., I can easily say that my Manhattan is one of the safest places to be...especially since we now live with heightened security after 9/11.
The crime rate has dropped for many successive years. You and your son will love NYC.

Safe? Of course its safe. Essentialy all of Manhattan if safe, the safest big City in the US. The Y that you mention is certainly centrally located, subway nearby, blocks from Rockerfeller Cetner and 5th Avenue, and easy walk to Central Park

Obviousyl it doesnt have the comforst and ease of a major hotel but I assume that you have gooten a good rate on the room.

If the Vanderbillt is anything like the West Side Y then go for it. I just stayed at the West Side Y and it was amazing. Great staff, GREAT location, and extremely safe. At the West Side Y you had to show your room key each time you entered the building, they had 24hr. security.
