For instance, churches are known to have many graven images (or idols/statutes). However, Exodus 20:4,5 says, "you must not make for yourself a carved image or a form like anything that is in the heavens above or that is on the earth underneath or that is in the waters under the earth. You must not bow down to them nor be induced to serve them, because I Jehovah your God am a God exacting exclusive devotion, bringing punishment for the error of fathers upon sons, upon the third generation and upon the fourth generation, in the case of those who hate me."

A scritpure true to form, yet, people wear jewelry of Jesus on the cross, bow down to idols in the churches (ex. Virgin Mary, Jesus on cross). Nevertheless, these people think they are serving God and/or Jesus. But these same people smoke, abuse alcohol, use profanity like a sailor and lead immoral lives. If Jesus were on earth today, would he be pleased with that kind of worship? Something to think about....The floor is yours...

From the answers I saw, I laughed. You do not have to be a JW to know about Exodus 20:4,5. That is a basic scritpure. That is the problem I have. Exodus 20:4,5 is in everyone's bible.

The Jews might not have this problem, but they have bigger issues, like observing the sabbath, despite no longer being under the Mosaic Law today and Jehovah leaving the Israelites totally because they disobeyed God's laws and of course, killed God's only begotten son.

Just because you do not "worship" the jewelry, you still should not have graven images. There is no way around that. Jehovah says not to have graven images at all. He shuns all forms of these things. You might not worship, but you support graven images by wearing it.

Perhaps the quintessential 'graven image' is the cross, the instrument of Christ's impalement.

Yet Jesus almost certainly died while impaled on a simple stake, rather than a cross of two intersecting beams. Of course the Romans had the ability to create such devices, and probably did. But ask yourself: why they would have bothered when a simple stake would have worked just as well or better?

It is also enlightening to examine other relevant Scriptures.

You may be interested to see how your own copy of the bible translates Acts 5:30, Galatians 3:13, Deuteronomy 21:22, 23, and Acts 10:39. The King James, Revised Standard, Dyaglott, and Jerusalem Bible translate the instrument of Christ's death simply as "stake" or "tree" because the original wording simply does not support the idea that this was more than a piece of upright wood.

It is also eye-opening to examine how the first-century Christians felt about idols of any kind, much less one that glorified an instrument of death.

You sound like you're probably a Jehovah's Witness. Since you think that a person supports graven images by wearing a cross as jewelry, I'd like to ask you something.

Here is a quote from the Watchtower:

*** g76 12/22 p. 12 Are They Idolatrous Decorations? ***

“The ‘Heart’ was one of the sacred symbols of [the Egyptian god] Osiris when he was born again, and appeared as Harpocrates, or the infant divinity . . . The veneration of the ‘sacred heart’ seems also to have extended to India, for there Vishnu . . . is represented as wearing a heart suspended on his breast . . . Now, the worship of the ‘Sacred Heart’ was just, under a symbol, the worship of the ‘Sacred Bel,’ that mighty one of Babylon.”

None of the Jehovah's Witnesses I know, and I know quite a few,
ever gave any consideration at all to the fact that the heart, as well as the cross, is of pagan origin.

I've known many of them to wear heart pendants and earrings. Were they supporting graven images?

I personally don't worship the cross I wear around my neck. I wear it as a constant reminder of what my God did for me and to let others know of my faith.
True, satan does control some through sins of the body, we all live in current day Babylon and have to be constantly aware of the temptations being thrust at us. Praise God that through grace I am saved and forgiven of those sins.

Read Jeremiah 7 and 44, and you will see just how God hates such behavior. He has told us plainly how He wants us to worship Him, and when we don't (by having paganism/man made traditions) in our worship of Him it makes Him mad at us. We are to OBEY Him and keep/so His commandments.
