It's pretty safe, all the employees there are bound by confidentiality not to tell other people about the patent applications they get before the application is accepted or rejected.

At any rate, there's a fee associated with filing a patent application. It's something along the lines of $600.

If you really want to see about patenting something, and you can cover the fees, the best thing you can do is contact a patent attorney. Just call your largest local lawfirm and tell the person who answers the phone, "I want to patent something, do you have an attorney on staff who can help me, or someone who might be able to point me to one?"

Under U.S. law any information you give the Patent Office is protected and private and can not be given to anyone in any circumstances. It is completly safe and it is better to work with the Patent Office yourself to learn the requirements. The people who are most likely to steal your idea are the people who advertise that they can get your idea patented and are not lawyers. If you later decide to hire a patent lawyer, be sure to ask for references and call them.

First of all it's very safe, but you really should get a patant/ trademark lawyer to help you out.
